Family Primer on College Admissions

College admissions is changing rapidly and is a different and more complex process than it was for the parents of our clients who applied to college. The Family Primer on College Admissions is perfect for families of 8th, 9th and first semester 10th graders. This is a private 90 minute meeting with your family. In addition to providing you with a detailed overview of the process, we will answer any questions that you have regarding your student and college admissions. Planning ahead and understanding what your student can do now impacts the quality and strength of their applications later. Learn more.

9th and 10th Grades - The Foundation

The 9th and 10th grades are foundational years for creating and maximizing opportunity. SBG helps students create a four year course plan that not only meets high school graduation and college admission requirements but helps put students in the most competitive position when applying to college. Each student is unique and SBG carefully prepares an academic plan that reflects each student’s interests and abilities.

Through extracurricular activities, students explore and develop their interests, skills and talents and demonstrate their character. SBG guides clients in identifying and pursuing meaningful extracurriculars, including summer programs, that align with their goals.

While most 9th and 10th graders meet with SBG three times a year, we are available to support clients as often as they need, including with selective extracurricular and summer program applications and other opportunities. Learn more.

Junior Year to the Finish Line!

SBG’s personalized college counseling is tailored to each student’s unique strengths, interests, and goals to help them thrive and stand-out in their applications. SBG creates a comprehensive roadmap with clear milestones and actionable steps, helping students stay organized and confident throughout the process. Building on the 9th and 10th grade foundation (please see above), we continue course planning to establish a strong record of academics and identify or create extracurricular opportunities while guiding students in their college search and building a balanced list of good fit colleges. We meet regularly, focusing on critical parts of the application process including college campus visits, letters of recommendation, admissions interviews, essay brainstorming and development, application strategy and completion, and post-application matters like deferrals, waitlists and letters of continued interest. In addition to regular counseling sessions, we provide tools to support research, communication and deadline management. Clients enroll in this program from the summer before junior year through the summer before senior year. Upon request, and if space is available, it is possible to start earlier. Learn more.
